Views of consumers and other food chain actors on organic food and its production Organic Eprints
Aakkula, Jyrki; Forsman-Hugg, Sari; Jakosuo, Katri; Kottila, Marja-Riitta; Rönni, Päivi; Sarkkinen, Eliisa.
In this study we have examined what kind of views and attitudes consumers and other food chain actors have concerning organic food and its production and how these views and attitudes differ. The survey data from year 2003 consist of responses by 1 186 consumers and 333 other food chain actors. The main methods used in the analysis of survey responses were factor, cluster and discriminant analyses. With the help of these methods, consumers and other food chain actors were clustered into various groups. The discriminant analysis was based on respondents’ attitudes towards organic food and organic food production. As a result of the analysis, five differing attitudinal groups among the consumers were identified. These attitudinal groups were Believers,...

RESULTS OF THE NORTH DAKOTA LAND VALUATION MODEL FOR THE 2006 AGRICULTURAL REAL ESTATE ASSESSMENT AgEcon
Aakre, Dwight G.; Vreugdenhil, Harvey G..
This report summarizes the 2006 results of the North Dakota Land Valuation Model. The model is used annually to estimate average land values by county, based on the value of production from cropland and non-cropland. The county land values developed from this procedure form the basis for the 2006 valuation of agricultural land for real estate tax assessment. The average "all land value" from this analysis is multiplied by the total acres of agricultural land on the county abstract to determine each county's total agricultural land value for taxation purposes. The State Board of Equalization compares this value with the total value assessed to agricultural property in each county. Each county is required by state statute to assess a total value of...

Strategic Joint Production Under Common-Pool Output Quotas: The Case of Fisheries Bycatch AgEcon
Abbott, Joshua K.; Wilen, James E..
We develop a simple game-theoretic model to explain the production decisions of firms when the production of a marketed good is complementary with the output of an associated good for which no market is available and the output of both goods is regulated by exogenously determined common pool output quotas. This scenario matches that of many fisheries in which regulators attempt to simultaneously manage harvests of targeted species and bycatch of other species through common pool quotas and seasonal closures. Under a competitive equilibrium, individual fishermen fail to fully account for the external effects of their harvest decisions on the season length, leading to excessive discards, drastically shortened seasons, and large shares of un-harvested quota...

The flexor tendons in the didelphid manus Mastozool. neotrop.
Abdala,Virginia; Moro,Silvia; Flores,David A..
Tetrapods have flexor tendons in the palmar surface of the manus that transmit forces generated by superficial and deep forearm muscles to the digits. Two patterns ("P" and "L") of tendinous connections among the deep layer of the forearm muscles and the digits have been described, one of which (pattern P) shows an empirical correlation with some grade of arboreality. In this article, we focused on the anatomical design of the tendons of the deep layer of the palmar surface of the didelphid manus, and associated muscles. Our objectives are: (1) to describe the pattern found in all taxa of the great didelphid clade, (2) to assign the designs that we found to the L or P pattern, and (3) to discuss our results in the context of the latest available...

Morphological, chemical and developmental aspects of the Dufour gland in some eusocial bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae): a review Rev. Bras. entomol.
Abdalla,Fábio Camargo.
Morphological, chemical and developmental aspects of the Dufour gland in some eusocial bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae): a review. The present revision focused on the more recent data about the Dufour gland in some eusocial bees, taking in account general aspects of its morphology, secretion chemical nature, bio-synthetic pathway and development. Many functions have been attributed to this gland in eusocial bees, but none are convincing. With the new data about this gland, not only the secretion chemical pathway of the Dufour gland may be reasonable understood, as its function in some eusocial bees, especially Apis mellifera Linné, 1758, which has been extensively studied in the last years.

Improvement of adynamic bone disease after renal transplantation BJMBR
Abdallah,K.A.; Jorgetti,V.; Pereira,R.C.; dos Reis,L.M.; Pereira,L.M.; Corrêa,P.H.S.; Borelli,A.; Ianhez,L.E.; Moysés,R.M.A.; David-Neto,E..
Low bone remodeling and relatively low serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels characterize adynamic bone disease (ABD). The impact of renal transplantation (RT) on the course of ABD is unknown. We studied prospectively 13 patients with biopsy-proven ABD after RT. Bone histomorphometry and bone mineral density (BMD) measurements were performed in the 1st and 12th months after RT. Serum PTH, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and osteocalcin were measured regularly throughout the study. Serum PTH levels were slightly elevated at transplantation, normalized at the end of the third month and remained stable thereafter. Bone biopsies performed in the first month after RT revealed low bone turnover in all patients, with positive bone aluminum staining...

Vertical migration of zooplankton groups in an Eutrophic bay, Dekhaila harbor, Alexandria, Egypt OceanDocs
Abdel-Aziz, N.E..
Diel vertical migration of different zooplankton groups in Dekhaila Harbor was studied monthly from May 2003 to April 2004. Generally, more groups were found in the surface layer (0-10 m.) than the deeper one (10-20 m.). Some zooplankton groups undergo significant vertical migration at certain time of the year, others showed no clear differences in distribution patterns and exhibited no directed movement patterns. Some species stayed a part of the day within certain layer of the water column, others were randomly dispersed in the whole water column during different hours. Responses appear to depend also on the life stages of each zooplankton group, as well as other ecological conditions such as temperature, light and amount of food. Population budget...

Spatial variation of phytoplankton and some physico-chemical variables during the highest flood season in Lake Nasser (Egypt) OceanDocs
Abdel-Halim, A.M.; Gharib, S.M..
Species composition, abundance, and phytoplankton biomass in Lake Nasser were studied during the highest flood season in autumn 1999, and were supported by some physico-chemical environmental parameters. The nutrient salts levels were low to medium, with ranges of 0.96-9.92 g/L for nitrite, 20.14-72.14 g/L for ammonia, complete depletion -27.69 g/L for phosphate, and 5.83-9.00 g/L for silicate. A total of 71 taxa were identified, of which 46% were chlorophytes, 26% bacillariophytes and 22% cyanophytes. Phytoplankton abundance and biomass values were higher in the northern stations than in the southern, but were lower than previously reported, indicating approaching from oligomesotrophic status, with, respectively, means of 108.9 x 104 unit/L and 1.18...

Effect of selected anti-inflammatory drugs on the lethal actions of Leiurus quinquestriatus venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Abdoon,N. A.; Ali,A. A.; Alnema,A. A.; Hag-Ali,M.; Fatani,A. J..
The cumulative actions of scorpion neurotoxins are complex and may be traced to activation of different ion channels with subsequent release of various transmitters and modulators including inflammatory mediators. This could lead to various pathological manifestations such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and multiple organ failure (MOF). Several approaches have been advocated to treat the multitude of scorpion-venom-elicited pathological changes. However, few have tried to combat the venom-induced effects on the inflammatory process, which manifest as ARDS, SIDS and MOF. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the capability of inhibitors of different steps of the inflammatory sequence of...

Computable General Equilibrium Analysis of the Economic and Land-use Interfaces of Bio-energy Development AgEcon
Abdula, Rahimaisa D..
This paper explores the inter-sectoral and land-use dynamics behind the development of bio-energy as a climate change policy through a computable general equilibrium (CGE) with a land use change (LUC) model. It assesses the economic and social costs of bio-energy development both in terms of the financial investment needed for its market penetration and in terms of the trade-offs its future supply will entail upon the land-use system. It analyzes how policies directed to develop bio-energy alters the pattern of energy mix and land utilization in the economy and how these changes in turn contribute to carbon dioxide (CO2) mitigation. Policies analyzed in the study include carbon tax with revenues recycled upon bio-energy subsidy and upon direct tax...

Leveraging regional growth dynamics in African agriculture AgEcon
Abdulai, Awudu; Johnson, Michael; Diao, Xinshen.
This study focuses on public investments and policy reforms for leveraging growth spillovers at the Africa regional level. It reviews first the theory and evidence of knowledge and growth spillovers generally and second the evidence in the African context. Given the limited and scattered evidence of actual past spillovers, it reviews recent ex ante simulations using partial and general equilibrium models to stress the potential for spillovers from greater cooperation in agricultural research, and from trade liberalization, policy harmonization and investments in infrastructure. The results show that permitting greater crossborder transfers and adopting improved technologies could have large spillover multiplier effects on overall economic welfare in the...

Environmental Injustice: An Ohio Case Study AgEcon
Abdul-Mohsen, Ashraf; Hitzhusen, Frederick J..
Valuation of environmental regulations and policy changes is usually focused on the achievement of economic efficiency or potential Pareto improvement (PPI): a proposed change or policy is accepted if those who gain from carrying out a specific project or policy could, in principle, compensate those who lose from implementing that policy so no one is worse off. Aggregate measures of value such as aggregate willingness to pay are common measures of economic efficiency. However, in reality, compensations by the gainers to the losers of a policy seldom take place and the disadvantaged must bear most if not all the cost of the adverse effects of the policy change or environmental degradation. Furthermore, willingness to pay is largely dependent on the ability...

Gender Differences in Mobilization for Collective Action: Case Studies of Villages in Northern Nigeria AgEcon
Abdulwahid, Saratu.
Men and women participate in collective action for different purposes in northern Nigeria. Field work conducted in six villages show that while men engage in community activities such as road repairs, maintenance of schools and hospitals, refuse collection and maintenance of the traditional village government, women mobilize around activities such as savings, house and farm work and care giving. It is argued that men mobilize around community activities outside the home because of their public orientation and because they want to maintain their dominance of that space. Women, in contrast, mobilize around activities in keeping with their domestic orientation and traditional roles such as care giving and housework. Religion also influences the extent of...

The Niger Food Crisis: Causes and Implications for Research and Development from an Integrated Agricultural Economics Perspective AgEcon
Abele, Steffen; Twine, Edgar.
During the 2004 food crisis in Niger, the weakness of the main production system, millet, to produce enough food to sustain short term crises, has been revealed. Questions arise how the Nigerian smallholder systems can be assisted by research and development policies to intensify production and improve food security. The paper assesses technical options according to their economic sustainability. A sequence of models is applied: On plot level, production functions of inter cropping systems were estimated to determine yields and their variability of the major crops. These data were fed in a nonlinear program to test the inn ovations, first at stable prices, then at declining prices that were obtained from an interregional trade model. The latter was shocked...

Astyanax paranae Eigenmann, 1914 (Characiformes: Characidae) in the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil: diet composition and variation Neotropical Ichthyology
Abelha,Milza Celi Fedatto; Goulart,Erivelto; Kashiwaqui,Elaine Antoniassi Luiz; Silva,Marlene Rodrigues da.
Aspects of the feeding ecology of a small characin, Astyanax paranae, were studied during 1996/1997 and 1998/1999 in the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil (25º01'50.0'' S; 050º03'41.9'' W). Fishes were quarterly captured from the reservoir's riverine and lacustrine zones and stomachs contents of 711 adult individuals were analyzed by volumetric method. Species' feeding spectrum and spatial, temporal and sexual variations on diet were evaluated. Data matrix was summarized by detrented correspondence analysis (DCA) and the axes scores from DCA were used as variables in one-way ANOVA of null models to test diet variations. Astyanax paranae fed on detritus/sediment, plant matter, algae and aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. The time-space prevalence of...
